Time feels different in Portugal.

Here, the year isn’t just 12 months ticking by — it’s marked by spring flowers bursting onto balconies, slow afternoons in July heat, and the warm smell of roasted chestnuts in November.

In today’s lesson, we’re going to walk through the months and seasons in Portuguese, with real-life examples you’ll actually hear and use.

🎥 Watch & Learn

🗣️ TOPIC OF THE WEEK: Os Meses e as Estações do Ano

Let’s start with the months. They're all lowercase in Portuguese — just like the days of the week.

🗓️ The 12 Months of the Year / Os 12 Meses do Ano

  1. janeiro – January
➤ O ano começa no dia 1 de janeiro. (The year begins on January 1st.)

🌱 Time Moves with the Seasons

In Portugal, the seasons are more than just weather — they shape food, festivals, and family rhythms.

  • Spring (a primavera): Markets fill with fresh greens and strawberries. It’s also the season of recomeço — new beginnings.
➤ Vou esperar até a primavera para começar o meu jardim.
(I’ll wait until spring to start my garden.)

  • Summer (o verão): Time for long lunches, beach days, and village festivals. Most people take vacation in August.
➤ Vou de férias este verão. (I’m going on vacation this summer.)

  • Autumn (o outono): The smell of roasted chestnuts on street corners. Trees turn brown, and life slows down.
➤ As folhas ficam castanhas no outono. (The leaves turn brown in autumn.)

  • Winter (o inverno): Short days, warm soups, and holidays with family.
➤ Não tivemos muita neve durante este inverno. (We didn’t have much snow this winter.)
